Good morning everyone, my name is Javiera Olivares Alvarado, and I am in my fourth year of visual arts at the university of chile. When I was little my favorite subject at school was visual arts. My most significant teacher was called Dante, he had a lot of vocation and a great desire for us to learn. I remember that this teacher changed my perspective about art. He gave importance to the artistic process, to what it meant to create beyond a perfect result. Dante taught us to make mistakes, and to make these a part of our creative process and of the work itself. In this way, I learned to enjoy the artistic endeavor, leaving aside the pressures and expectations, and embrace the learning that the whole process of creation implies. I still remember a time when we were creating a mural, there came a moment when the task became frustrating and exhausting, we reached a point where we were doing it for the sake of doing it. Because of this situation, he called the whole class together, and asked us: ‘what are you doing?’ We all answered: ‘the mural.’ He asked again, but why are you doing it? We answered: ‘because you asked us to.’ He told us: ‘look guys, I can give you all an excellent grade, if that is the concern, but my real intention is that you are motivated and enjoying the process.’ I really feel that thanks to this teacher and the art class he gave us, I discovered my passion, for which I am very grateful because today I am studying Visual Arts.
